Tattooing is a relatively common form of self-expression in many countries around the world (Sanders, 1988;Stuppy, Armstrong, Casals-Ariet, 1998; Armstrong, Masten, Martin, 2000; FrederickBradley, 2000). Tattoos have been around for years they were once used to identify slaves, seaman, criminals and others who made their association to a particular group. Tattoos have always had a negative connotation attached to it. There seemed to be a shift in popularity as Americans seen more and more celebrities sporting tattoos. At one point, tattoos were seen as a fad or a sign of rebellion for some. Tattoos no longer were seen as bad or deviant, but as a form of self-expression. (Edgerton and Dingman) pg. 16. In a professional setting tattoos are viewed as more acceptable than in the past. Americans dont mind seeing a tattoo visible on someones body. Which gives tattoos more of a mainstream appeal. Tattoos no longer represent deviant behavior, but has turned into a fashion statement. Most that have tattoos are a kind of representation what a person has loved, lost, and gained. Tattoos tell a story of a person lifes and is a way for someone to stand out in society. Tattoos kind of set you apart from the average looking American the more tattoos the more unique a person may look. Tattoos are not longer looked upon as a stigmatization, but are socially and universally accepted in todays society. Tattoos have dated back thousands of years. The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian â€Å"tatuâ €  meaning to mark something. Tattoos have been prevalent in Eastern and Western cultures. These body markings represented different meanings. These marks indicated membership of a particular tribe, warrior caste, community of believers, or social group.
